Foods provide nutrients as complex integral parts of a whole matrix, not as individual or isolated chemicals. Nutrients as parts of integrated whole foods are what our bodies are designed to utilize for optimal nutrition. And as organic farmers know, for the plants we eat to have optimal nutrition, they also need utilizable complex nutrient forms. How do they obtain them? 

In Nature, beneficial soil micro-organisms transform rocks, sand, and clay into more complex nutrient forms that plants need for nourishment. That is why organic farmers try to work in harmony with soil micro-organisms. 

At Bio-Foods, beneficial food micro-organisms transform USP vitamin and mineral molecules into more complex nutrient forms for optimal human nutrition. Until Bio-Foods was founded, the transformation of nutrient forms by Nature's living organisms was not well utilized in the area of vitamin supplementation. 

Since the 1920's, partly because foods have to be taken apart to be chemically defined, vitamin researchers dismantled the complex structures of nature--isolating vitamins away from the other constituents of food in order to define and publish their chemical structures, and then to synthesize them in commercial quantities. Over time, vitamin companies came to promote higher and higher doses of those pure vitamin molecules instead of the foods containing them.

At first, industry pioneers had sold extracts of natural foods like alfalfa and rose hips (somewhat like today's green foods). Those extracts probably contained nutrient forms little changed from their original state. Later, competition forced vitamin companies to substitute more and more of their food with more and more synthesized vitamins (that are not in complex formation with any food matrix), in order to claim greater and greater potencies per tablet. 

Later, some vitamin companies left out the food altogether and simply promoted large doses of pure synthesized vitamins. "Mega Dose" and "Hypo-Allergenic" were the catch phrases of the day. To a degree, the food-like state that Nature meant vitamins to be in, and the vital interaction or synergism our industry always believed natural whole foods provide was neglected. 

More recently, some vitamin companies tried to re-introduce some synergy by fortifying large amounts of USP vitamins and minerals with small amounts of food materials. Referred to wishfully as "whole food concentrates", "food-based vitamins", "synergistic blends" and the like, a simple mixture can not compare with a wholesome food produced by Nature itself. 

Then In 1991 Bio-Foods, Ltd. was founded to persue a radically different course; to utilize Nature's beneficial food micro-organisms to transform USP nutrients into complex integral parts of a whole food matrix. To accomplish this Bio-Foods developed its proprietary yeast fermentation processes. 

Today, in an environment of ever increasing discoveries of valuable phytonutrients and synergistic functionalities of food constituents, the importance of a complex whole vs an isolated component is becoming profoundly appreciated.
